The patron saint of the church gave the village its name, and the much better-known name "Saiga Hans", which is commonly used in the vernacular, also originated from the dialectal "Sailiga (blessed) Hans". However, the Saiga Hans people themselves explain their name differently. They believe that "Saiga Hans" refers to the "Hans" (St John) with the "Söchter" (jokingly "Seicher"). The original smaller church building was erected at the end of the 13th century in place of a hunting chapel belonging to the Hochkuchler family. The church harbours a special treasure in the form of a Man of Sorrows and a Madonna in the Rosary, which presumably originate from the workshop of the Schwanthaler family, who lived in Ried.
