Take bus lines 1 or 2 from the main square to the “Harbachsiedlung” stop. Cross Leonfeldner Straße and turn left at Buffet Auer onto the street “Am Alten Feldweg.” At the end of that street, turn left into Harbachpark (giant pendulum swing). Follow the ascending forest path to Pachmayrstraße. Cross the street and follow the path diagonally across from Kühreiterweg to Gasthof Waldschänke. Kühreiterweg is the only access road (for vehicle traffic). The road winds mostly through the shady forest. At the Waldschänke, it’s worth taking a break in the outdoor dining area. Passing the wildlife enclosure, the trail now descends through the forest—a bit steep at first—as you pass several waterfalls. The trail joins Gründbergstraße. Hike along the Höllmühlbach stream to the corner of Gründbergstraße and Ackerlweg. From here, you can ascend to the Giselawarte on the Lichtenberg (926 m, walking time approx. 3 hours). Continue left along the steadily ascending Ackerlweg (Gründberg community gardens) until you reach Klausenweg (corner of Höllmühlstraße). Keep walking downhill on Klausenweg; the road becomes steeper and narrower toward the end (car traffic). You will now reach Leonfeldner Straße—from here, you can return by taking bus No. 38 from the “Winklerbrücke” stop to “Rudolfstraße” (near the Nibelungenbrücke). Cross Leonfeldner Straße; walking along the Marienberg and Magdalenastraße, you’ll reach the start of the Horse-Drawn Railway Promenade at the Oberwirt Inn. Take note of the commemorative plaque about the horse-drawn railway on the wall of Kirchenplatz (in front of the entrance to St. Magdalena Church). You are now on the Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail. At the edge of the main forest, you can see one of the last remaining sections of track. This is also where the 900-meter-long 1st Linz Bird Education Trail begins, which offers insights into the local birdlife through informational signs. The hiking trail leads into a narrow path; at the end of it, turn right onto the dirt road. Tip for fans of the horse-drawn railway: If you walk a few meters to the left up toward Schatzweg, you’ll find an overview map showing the route of the Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail from Bujanov (Czech Republic) to St. Magdalena. Walk through the forest to reach Altenberger Straße. Stroll through the grounds of Johannes Kepler University and be sure to take a look at the inner courtyard of Auhof Castle. The upper section of the tower was built in the 15th and 16th centuries. The originally Romanesque, then late Gothic nave walls were built at the end of the 15th century and a formerly higher nave with a flat ceiling was newly vaulted. In 1768, the church was remodelled by the Linz master builder Franz Xaver Krinner (1736-1798). From 1913 to 1914, the side aisles were added according to the plans of master builder Matthäus Schlager and a staircase was built in the corner of the tower for the west gallery. From 1981 to 1982, the church was remodelled by architect Anton Zemann . The northern choir extension was extended and a spiral staircase added.
