Mythical Danube River, Salty Traun River, Iron Enns River – a pleasure bike ride tracing the fascination of the land between these streams. River cycling along the Danube and Traun, the Traun-Danube floodplains European protected area, the Linz cultural skyline, magnificent four-sided courtyards in the Traun-Enns hill ridge area ... and numerous cultural treasures. Final highlight: ferry crossing.

**Highlights:**

- Danube jewel Mauthausen (magnificent riverside, granite art, Pragstein Castle…)

- Baroque jewel St. Florian Abbey (Bruckner organ, tomb of St. Florian...)

- Roman city Enns (UNESCO World Heritage Museum Lauriacum & Roman lime kilns, 360° panoramic view from the town tower)

- European protected area Traun-Danube floodplains (riparian forest & bird protection on the outskirts of Linz)

**Directions:**
A magnificent start is the Danube jewel Mauthausen at the confluence of the Danube and Enns. The magnificent riverside with Pragstein Castle and the charming town center tell of prosperity through tolls, iron, salt, and granite. A Danube highlight! By the legendary Enns River, the precious iron ore from the Styrian Eisenwurzen once reached the Danube. From the Danube bank, you follow the edge of the Danube plain through settlement areas to St. Georgen an der Gusen. Initially on a slightly hilly, moderately trafficked secondary road, after Langenstein mostly on wide bike paths alongside the main road. Shortly before St. Georgen an der Gusen, the return to the mythical river begins. On secondary roads, the landscape becomes more rural. Finally, you cycle enjoyably through primeval riparian forests out to the mighty Danube stream.

Shortly downstream, you cross over the impressive Danube power plant Abwinden-Asten to the other bank. Now begins top-class river cycling: enjoy pedaling along the dike on the legendary Danube bike path towpath upstream. A cooling breeze, ship traffic ... and birdsong. Barely known, on the left in the riparian forests lies the European protected area Traun-Danube floodplains, an important bird paradise. At the Traun mouth, Linz surprises with an almost surreal industrial landscape and reminds of its transformation into a cultural capital. On the wonderful riverbank bike path, you cycle along the legendary Traun River – on which the valuable salt from the Salzkammergut once reached the Danube – continuing to Ebelsberg. Today a district of Linz, Ebelsberg entered world history during Napoleon’s time through its strategically important Traun crossing. Here begins the journey through one of Upper Austria’s most beautiful rural cultural landscapes: gentle rolling hills, fertile fields, traditional scattered orchards, the largest four-sided courtyards in Upper Austria ... the Traun-Enns hill ridge area!

Quiet country roads meander in harmony with the landscape. Gradually rising gently to Wambach, then a short steep hill ridge demands a sweat tribute. The long enjoyable descent to Rohrbach surprises. At the manor-like Jahreszeitenhof (365 windows, 12 gates) in Gemering begins the final hill ridge ascent. After a short forest section, unusual views open at the summit onto the St. Florian Abbey basilica. A short, very steep (!) descent and you stand before the imposing Baroque jewel St. Florian Abbey, a Danube highlight! It is one of Austria’s largest Baroque monasteries: the abbey basilica, the world-famous Bruckner organ, the tombs of St. Florian and music virtuoso Anton Bruckner ... Have fun discovering! Another short, very steep (!) descent and you cycle through the historic town of St. Florian out into the Danube plain.

Through a mosaic of fertile fields, past the remarkable open-air museum Sumerauerhof and other beautiful four-sided courtyards ... you continue almost flat on country roads toward Enns. Between the motorway and city, road traffic briefly increases. Finally, perched on a ridge is the picturesque old town of Enns with its magnificent main square and 60 m high town tower, a Danube highlight! Enns is Austria’s oldest city and prospered through salt trade. Furthermore, in Roman times – then called Lauriacum – it was an important administrative city and legion camp. Tip: the magnificent 360° panoramic view from the town tower makes the multifaceted fascination of Enns clearly tangible! Then you roll down into the new town and cycle through fertile farmland – partly with a photogenic industrial skyline – out of the Danube plain. In the primeval riparian forest, a magnificent view of the historic Danube market Mauthausen completes the experience at the dock of the Donauradfähre. During the crossing, this scenery and the splashing of the water instinctively evoke reflection – a bike tour in the river!

**Safety guidelines:**
This pleasure cycling route leads almost entirely over quiet, asphalted (secondary) roads and bike paths. Only between the motorway and Enns should you expect slightly more traffic over just under 2 km, depending on the time of day. Basic shifting skills are advantageous in the hilly Traun-Enns hill ridge area. In St. Florian, two short, steeper descents require special caution. Please also note the operating times of the Donauradfähre ENNSEGG for the final ferry crossing to Mauthausen. If this is not in operation, you can use the alternative route over the Mauthausen Danube Bridge starting from Enns city center.

Lauriacum Museum

The archaeological finds from the site of the Roman legionary camp Lauriacum near Enns and its surroundings prompted a group of interested individuals to establish a museum association for Enns and the surrounding area in 1892. The owner of Ennsegg Castle provided a room in the castle’s steward’s quarters for the museum. In 1898, the association’s own collection was merged with the local history collection of the Old Town Hall and the Fürstenberg private collection. As a result, the association received permission to display its collection in the old council chamber.

This laid the foundation for what would later become the Museum Lauriacum. After a prolonged period of temporary housing due to bombings and a severe shortage of space in the postwar era, the exhibits could not be rearranged in the museum until 1964 and 1967. One of Austria’s most significant Roman-era public collections showcases the diversity of Roman culture at the most important military outpost on the Danube Limes in the province of Noricum. Among the numerous exhibits, the monumental inscription from the Lauriacum legionary camp, the military equipment, the funerary monuments, the numerous artifacts from everyday Roman life, the unique ceiling fresco, and a late antique fabric fragment are particularly noteworthy. Aspects of Enns’ medieval and modern city history are conveyed through, among other things, old views, historical weapons, the council chamber with its magnificent paintings, and the room displaying sacred art objects.

In 1988, the Lauriacum Museum received the Austrian Museum Prize and holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality. In preparation for the “800th Anniversary of Enns’s Charter of Municipal Rights,” extensive renovation work has been underway since fall 2011.

 Schloss Ennsegg

Schloss Pragstein Castle

One of the oldest villages in Upper Austria was also home to one of the few fortifications built directly in the Danube in Austria. As late as 1860, a few years before the major regulation of the Danube, Pragstein Castle was located on a rocky island near Mauthausen, connected to the riverbank only by a bridge. This also explains its keel-shaped construction. The castle had to withstand a number of floods, so care was taken during construction to create a streamlined floor plan. In addition, the building has a wedge-shaped tip on the west side facing the river, which served as a breakwater. The four-storey, rectangular building is crowned by a mighty hipped roof. On the upstream west side, the roof shows a cross created by the type of shingles. Directly below the hipped roof is a surrounding arched frieze on corbels. One of these stands out in particular. On the north side facing the riverbank is the large iron-bound gate with a one-man hole, above which is a flat bay window on stepped consoles on the 2nd floor. There was a sally port on the opposite side of the river, but this no longer exists. The stone coat of arms of the barons of Prague can still be seen above it today. The windows and light openings on the lower storeys are rather plain. On the upper two floors, however, the window jambs from the time of construction are richly moulded. The entire building has strong corner ashlars. The interior is dominated by Gothic elements, barrel vaults with Renaissance stucco frames from around 1600. The castle is entered through the gate on the market side with a one-man hole. Directly behind the gate is a small vaulted vestibule supported by stone pillars. Down here there are several cellar rooms as well as the usable horse stable. The upper floors are reached via a relatively simple staircase. On each floor, the staircase leads into a hall-like central corridor. This corridor leads to the large rooms, some with beautiful wooden Riemling ceilings. On the second upper floor, the cut-off remains of a star-ribbed vault have been preserved in the corridor, which is vaulted with a spire. There was probably once a chapel with a polygonal apse here.

Sumerauerhof St. Florian

#### History

The farm appears as early as 1200 in a document issued by Bishop Wolfker of Passau. At that time, however, it was not yet a square farmstead, but rather a group of buildings constructed of either clay or wood, depending on their purpose. In 1378, the Sumerauerhof was listed among the major estates of the St. Florian Abbey. Over the course of the 17th century, the residential and farm buildings were likely combined to form a classic square farmstead. In 1855, a fire destroyed part of the residential wing. The farmstead was subsequently rebuilt, and its structure remained largely unchanged until 1971. In 1978, the Sumerauerhof—one of the largest farms in Upper Austria—was purchased by the State of Upper Austria and opened as an open-air museum.

Today, with its wood-paneled parlor and, above all, its living quarters—some of which have been preserved in their original state—the farm offers a glimpse into the domestic living conditions of the wealthy farmers of the Florianer Landl region at the end of the 19th century.
