Summer opening of the Bärenriedlau Hut: with new photo exhibition "Between rock and sky"

A monument with history Today, the 300-year-old Bärenriedlau Hut is one of the most culturally and historically significant buildings in the Pyhrn-Priel region. Built in the early 18th century, it initially served as simple accommodation for shepherds and hunters and later as hunting quarters for Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Today it is owned by the Austrian Federal Forests and is considered a historical jewel in the Kalkalpen National Park.

From 2011 to 2014, the hut was renovated with great care and craftsmanship in keeping with its listed status by the National Park Authority of the Austrian Federal Forests and the Kalkalpen National Park. From August 14 to September 7, 2025, the hut can be visited free of charge and without registration from Thursday to Sunday between 10 am and 3 pm.

National park ranger Lisi provides information on site about the history of the building and the transformation of the region - from an imperial hunting ground to today's wildlife sanctuary in the protected area.

Arrival & hike
The hut is remote and can only be reached on foot.
Access is possible via the following paths: - Trail no. 461 from the village of St. Pankraz - Trail no. 462/461 from Roßleithen
Alternatively: From the Teufelskirche parking lot, follow the signs for "National Park Entrance" and follow Langer-Graben-Straße for around 6 km through wild and romantic countryside until you reach the junction with marked trail no. 461. A good level of fitness is required for the ascent (approx. 800 vertical meters, walking time 2.5 to 3 hours in partly steep terrain).
As the hut is not staffed, you must bring your own snacks and sufficient drinking water. In the event of persistent heavy rain, the hut remains closed for safety reasons
