There are only a few towns in Austria where the Middle Ages have left their mark as clearly as in Freistadt. The medieval city tour: Freistadt doesn't just follow the beaten track, we take a look behind the scenes together!

Our themed tour covers a period of a good 250 years: "ab urbe condita" up to around 1520. Back then, nothing (or: very little) turned into a prosperous town surprisingly quickly, soon protected by a mighty wall. Traders and craftsmen went about their business, all benefiting from the trade route to Bohemia - so much for the idyll.

But how did these people really live? How did they manage their daily lives? How - and above all - by what rules did they organize themselves?

In fact, we have a vivid image of this time in our heads, which is one thing above all: wrong!

We therefore answer a wide range of questions on our guided tour of the Free City of the Middle Ages:

• What is there to our idea of uneducated and unwashed people with bad teeth in dark robes?
• Were women really as without rights as we assume today?
• Do rats roam the dirty streets?
• Are beggars and lepers really lurking around every corner?
• And are all people really enslaved by the all-powerful church and exempt from the nobility?
• In short: could the Middle Ages really have been so "dark"?

If you join me on this journey, you must have the courage to let go of cherished prejudices. However, your image of the Middle Ages will not suffer as a result, but will become clearer and more colourful, because you will then be able to recognize the traces of yesterday in today.
