The Irrsee - the warmest bathing lake in the Salzkammergut
To the north of the Mondsee you can find the romantic Irrsee lake. This moor lake has a length of five kilometres, is about one kilometer wide and surrounded by a natural and unspoilt landscape. Due to its unique fauna and flora the whole lake is protected by nature protection laws. Swimmers enjoy its warm temperatures while fisherman appreciate its good stock of fish.
Despite its status as a nature reserve, gentle use by recreational athletes is of course allowed, even desired, as a rowing boat ride or swimming gives you a special connection to this unique lake. However, any contrary or harmful activity concerning the protective purpose of the Irrsee, is prevented. For example, motor boats are not allowed to drive on the Irrsee.
Therefore lake Irrsee offers a wonderful balance to the stressful everyday life for nature-lovers and those who are looking for relaxation and romantics.
The small-scaled mosaic of different landscape types at its shores though, offers many different habitats for rare and sometimes even endangered animal species. In spring, for example, you can enjoy the flute tones of the curlew, which is already on the verge of extinction in Austria and is native to the bogs of the Irrsee with a few breeding pairs.
