Holy and healing well of St Hedwig
An ancient spring flows just outside Bad Zell: "Das Hedwigsbründl".
The legend:
St Hedwig once made a pilgrimage to Rome on foot. She had previously vowed to walk the whole way barefoot, but her confessor ordered her to wear shoes. In order to fulfil both, she walked barefoot but carried her shoes in her hand. She also came to Zell on her hike and rested here. This is where the Hedwigsbründl is said to have been built.
According to a second legend, she wore iron shoes on her feet. St Hedwig was probably never in Bad Zell. However, this does not diminish the quality of the holy water. In the Middle Ages, it was customary to confirm the healing power of a Bründl by naming St Hedwig.
The Bründl gave its name to the St. Hedwig spa, which was built between 1974 and 1976 (and became a state spa in 1977).
Today, many people seeking healing make a pilgrimage to the Cella Hedwigsbründl.
