The collections of the Braunau District Museum are on display at two historic buildings that date back to the Gothic era. The fine exhibits at the so-called "Herzogsburg" are presented in display cases and cabinet, while visitors can step back in time by entering the original Bell Foundry House and experience 14th century Braunau.
Among the "Herzogsburg" Museum´s most valuable possessions are a Christmas Crèche with some 200 figurines from the second part of the 18th century, a late-gothic crucifix, and a Saint Wolfgang statue. The Sculpture Hall has elaborate works by Martin and Michael Zürn and by the popular Schwanthaler sculpture dynasty on display. The archeological collection includes a copy of the "Uttendorf Gold Necklace" from the Hallstatt period and a rare jug made of clay. Large diagrams document the history of archaeological finds from Prehistoric to modern age times in the District of Braunau.
What´s more, the Museum outlines the town's origins with plans and models and tells the story of Braunau´s famous sons and daughters through its colorful history.
Did you know that a body armor of a man, who lived 600 years ago, fits an eight year old boy today?
Exquisite wrought-iron crucifixes, dating from the Gothic to the Rococo era, along with an extensive collection of ancient locks and keys are on display at specially designated spaces.
The "Herzogsburg" District Museum is home to a grand collection of expressionist works by painter Aloys Wach.
