Walcher- und Färbergraben

It is actually a continuous ditch that has been dug in the east of the town centre and is divided by a stone bridge. At the time of the founding of the city, these moats were protecting the young city and its inhabitants from enemies. The "Walchergraben" was named after the "Tuchwalker", who were situated there. In the last century, a "Schleifmühle" (mill) was constructed there, and so it was renamed "Schleifmühlgraben".
Through both of the moats, the "Stadtbach" (stream) is flowing, which used to have a lot of fish in it and was useful for all the manufacturers in Braunau. Some mills were running there, the horses were washed there and also the "Färber" (dye workers) worked there. Before all that, the water was used for the three public baths. The water was taken out of the stream to use it for the washing of the body and after that, the dirty water was put back to the stream. The water was everything else than clean and so it was no drinking water. Still many people in Braunau were drinking this water and so epidemic plagues infested the city again and again.
