Parish Church
Mauerkirchen, Oberösterreich, Österreich
- Suitable for groups
The parish church with its 72 m high steeple is probably Mauerkirchen´s most significant landmark.
After a terrible fire in 1865, the mighty church (apart from the steeple which dates back to 1507) was redecorated in neo-Gothic style. The interior design is from the same period.
The first brickwork church in Mauerkirchen is said to date back to 912. Since brickwork buildings were a rarity back in those days, the settlement around the church was named after it (Mauer meaning made of bricks).
In the Middle Ages Mauerkirchen was a popular place of pilgrimage.
