Pestsäule Schweinbach

The plague column in Schweinbach dates back to 1666.

The location of the former plague cemeteries has mostly been forgotten today. However, the memory of the terrible plague lives on among the people. Some crosses are said to have been erected in memory of the plague or as thanks for the end of the terrible epidemic or over former plague cemeteries.

A plague cemetery is also said to have been located at the Gusensteg on Gallneukirchner Straße. The "old" Schweinbachers still spoke of the Freithof-Lüssl (belonging to the Stöger, now owned by the Schöffl family). The Stöckl cross located there is referred to as a plague cross and bears the date 1666, which was not a plague year, but the cross was probably associated with the plague cemetery after it was built. In recent years, several houses have been built next to the Stöger-Kreuzstöckl. No bone remains were found during the excavation work, which did not go very deep. Perhaps the plague cemetery was located further towards the village.
