Something very special . . .

A special sight is one of the three most famous Gothic winged altars in Upper Austria in the beautiful late Gothic parish church of Gampern.
The Gothic winged altar of Gampern

The altar is the third largest Gothic winged altar in Upper Austria and was made between 1497 and 1507.

    according to Guby (1917) to the Passau art workshops,
    according to district governor Lippe to Martin Kriechbaum and
    according to Gertraud Schodterer, to Johannes Baierlein the Elder;
    according to Kieslinger, to Lienhart Astl (1490-1500), the creator of the Hallstatt altar. Dr. Zauner is most likely to agree with this interpretation.
    There is also an opinion that the entire altar comes from the school of Michael Wohlgemuth, a painter from Nuremberg with whom Dürer was a student (Parish Chronicle).

Guby considers the cathedral provost Canonicus Wilhelm v. Nothaft from Passau to be the donor. Dr. Zauner notes that at the same time a Christoph v. Nothaft lived in Salzburg, whose coat of arms does not show a blue and gold but a gold and green helmet. He was provost of the cathedral of Passau and at the same time provost of Mattsee.

The donor of the altar, a canonicus, is shown kneeling on the predella on the right with his coat of arms.

The year 1515 is written backwards in the picture with the inscription: "Christoph Tummer und Johann Türck" (Last Judgement - "Gamperner Höll").

It is assumed that the altar was renovated for the first time around 1590. Further years of renovation are known to be 1807 and 1845.

1893-1894 Repair of the top attachment (Gesprenge) at the instigation of the priest Treml by Leopold Grießer, Weyer a. E., sculptor, new ornaments added.
