Wassertor (Water Archway) - Stadtmauer (City Wall)

Braunau am Inn, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather

If you stroll along the "Theatergasse" to head for the River Inn, you pass on the one side the backsides of the houses of the city square. Those were at the time of the "Ackerbürger" the homes of the rabble. On the other side, there are the Protestant church and the City Theatre. If you descend to the moat, and walk through the "Wassertor" (Water Archway), you can stroll along the Inn and Enknach beside the town´s huge and ancient ramparts. These belonged to the bastion fortress (Festungsmauern) that was erected in the last quarter of the 17th century and razed in 1808. After the short walk along the ramparts you can return to the Church Square by the Dr.-Kriechbaum Steps and you´re soon back in the town centre.
