Memorial stone

Since 1989, a memorial stone has stood in front of the former Hitler House in Braunau am Inn, symbolizing a critical examination of the Nazi past. The stone is made of granite from the former Mauthausen concentration camp and bears the inscription “For peace, freedom, and democracy—Never again fascism—Millions of dead serve as a warning.” This deliberately places the memory of the victims of National Socialism at the center while simultaneously sending a message of peace, democracy, and human rights.

The memorial stone is part of a broader culture of remembrance in Braunau am Inn. Every year around May 8, a memorial service is held for the victims of war and Nazism. The event honors those who were persecuted, deprived of their rights, and murdered under Nazi rule. Through this, the city aims to encourage an examination of the past while also drawing attention to the importance of peace, freedom, and democratic values.

Various events and projects also contribute to a critical examination of the town’s history. The memorial stone is thus not merely a monument, but a place of remembrance and reflection. It is intended to help ensure that the past is not suppressed, but rather that lessons are learned from it. At the same time, it serves as a reminder of how important it is to protect democratic values, human rights, and peaceful coexistence.
