Josef-Krempl Memorial

The famous Upper Austrian author and vernacular poet Josef Krempl was born on February 11, 1862 in Obertrattnach and attended the school at Gaspoltshofen. He later worked in Steyr as a painter and traveled Germany, France and Switzerland. In 1894 he returned to Steyr to work in the local weapons factory before he settled in Linz as a freelance writer. In 1908 he published "Deutscher Humor" ("German Humor"). From 1909 onwards Josef Krempl lived in Graz and Vienna where he died completely impoverished in the year 1914.

His work encompasses four poetry collections in dialect, one prose poem as well as three volumes of "Studien aus dem oö. Volksleben" ("Studies of Upper Austrian Bucolic Life").

In 1980 a memorial stone was erected at the house were he was born by sculptor Josef Furthner. The façade of the new elementary school building at Taufkirchen was adorned with a mural depicting Josef Krempl.
