Palmpark
Braunau am Inn, Oberösterreich, Österreich
- Suitable for groups
On 26 August 1806, the Nuremberg bookseller Johann Philipp Palm was executed by the French in Braunau for distributing the pamphlet "Germany in its deepest humiliation". The park bears his name in his honour.
The Palm Park, laid out after 1860, was originally the vegetable garden of the St. Geist Hospital. In 1866, a bronze statue of the Nuremberg bookseller Johann Philipp Palm, who was shot dead in 1806, was unveiled in the new park by Konrad Knoll from Munich. The Bavarian King Ludwig I made a contribution of 1000 guilders for this monument. Today, the memorial stands under old trees amidst well-tended flowerbeds in a beautiful park.
Other memorials to Johann Palm:
In 1926, the Bavarian Booksellers' Association had an obelisk erected on the spot where Palm was shot in 1806. At the base is a bronze relief with a bust of Palm. The obelisk is located on Palmweg, just a few minutes outside the city centre. Palm was buried in the town's cemetery. His gravestone is in the so-called first or old cemetery. His gravesite is preserved and maintained by the city.
