Pollheimerpark

Wels, Oberösterreich, Österreich
Pollheimerpark is located in the western section of the Ring (street) complex, which was planned in the Wilhelminian style and modelled on the Viennese model. A promenade designed as an avenue surrounds the park as a conclusion to Pollheimerstraße. The city wall between Pollheim Castle and the Lederer Tower, together with the town houses built against the city wall, border the park towards the historic city centre. Two passages through the city wall allow access from the Freiung. Following its redesign in 1999, the park presents itself as an elongated green space with a central square and winding paths. An old tree population of maples, lime trees and chestnuts is a reminder of the age of the green space. Shrub plantings along the path leading along the city wall separate it from the park.

The redesign in 1999 resulted in contiguous lawns and a reduction in the number of paths. The interpretation of the central park area as a memorial grove, introduced in the interwar period, was retained. Eight monuments commemorate the significance of the history of the military, war and war victims for the people of Wels.

Due to the large crowns of the old trees, large parts of the park are shaded. However, the park benches, which are not permanently installed, can be moved in response to weather conditions. Passers-by and park visitors take up this offer, especially in the summer heat or for a short break.

Although conceived as a place of peace and contemplation, the park cannot really live up to this claim even after the redesign due to its location on the busy Pollheimerstraße and the associated heavy exhaust and noise emissions.

As further stages of a three-stage remodelling, the city is considering paving work and new plaza solutions on the narrow sides of the park in the Ledererturm and Ringstraße/Zugang Freiung areas. Perimeter planting, which is planned as the final stage towards Pollheimerstraße, is intended to reduce the strong exhaust and noise emissions in the park.
