Ascherweiher

The Ascherweiher pond in the Braunau district of Ranshofen was created almost 500 years ago to utilise its water to power a mill. Over the centuries, the man-made cultural landscape has become a natural jewel worth protecting.

The Ascherweiher, which originally belonged to the Ranshofen monastery, has been a protected part of the landscape since 1991. As a monastery pond, it was not only used as a water reservoir to power the monastery mill, but also as a fish pond. Its clear water still harbours fish of various species today. The name "Ascherweiher" is probably derived from the fish species grayling. Together with the surrounding meadows, swamp forest and mixed forest landscapes, the Ascherweiher is an idyllic and relaxing natural jewel, where rare plant species have also found a home again.
