Prangerschützen Mondsee
Tiefgraben am Mondsee, Oberösterreich, Österreich
The Mondsee Prangerschützen are a festival rifle club whose origins can be traced back to 1845 in the State Archives in Linz.
The shooting club at that time had 30 members, whose task it was to loudly announce the Prangtag (Corpus Christi Day) with firecrackers and muskets.
The Christmas and New Year's shooting also dates back to this time.
A gunpowder bill for the priest's reception from 1896 is the last reference to this association. The Prangerschützenverein (Mondsee Prangerschützen) was founded in 1981 with 24 members in order to preserve and continue this custom. The association now has 71 members, 56 of whom are active members. Our traditional costume was designed in co-operation with the Upper Austrian Heimatwerk from traditional local costumes. It consists of: black Haferl shoes, grey socks, leather knee-breeches, white shirt, green body, purple jacket and black hat.
New Year's Eve custom: The salute over Lake Mondsee on 31 December at 12:00 noon sharp and the New Year's greetings to the population.
The Prangerstutzen is a muzzle-loader loaded with black powder and fired with a primer.
Members are accepted at the annual general meeting.
