Warscheneck-Süd-Wurzeralm

Spital am Pyhrn, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The Warscheneck Süd - Wurzeralm nature reserve includes the low and high moor areas of the Teichlboden as well as the alpine pastures of the Stubwiesalm, the Weierbauernalm and the Zickalm.

This alpine landscape jewel is framed by the Rote Wand, the Stubwieswipfel and the Schwarzeck. To the north rises the Seespitz. In the middle of these mountains lies the Teichlboden. It is the remains of a lake that formed in a hollow above impermeable layers of soil. A lake that eventually silted up and turned into a raised bog. Two such moors, the Filzmöser, can still be recognised today. Only mountain pines can thrive on this barren, nutrient-poor ground. In the immediate neighbourhood are the alpine pastures of the Wurzeralm, which are traditionally used for grazing. Coming from the Brunnsteinersee, the Teichl meanders through this landscape on its way to the Teichlschwund, where it disappears gurgling into the mountain. Only below the Wurzeralm, on the valley floor near Spital am Pyhrn, does it come to the surface again. It has its second source in a large spring near the valley station of the funicular railway. The entire area around Warscheneck and Wurzeralm is a popular hiking area and is excellently developed with paths. Particularly recommended for nature explorers is the themed circular hiking trail "2 million years in 2 hours" on the formation of the mountains and today's landscape.
