Europaschutzgebiet Wiesengebiete und Seen im Alpenvorland

The European nature reserve combines a number of different protected areas. These are wet meadows, moors and lakes between the Pfeiferanger and the Seeleithensee in the Ibmer Moor in the west to the Kreuzbauernmoor in the municipality of Pfaffing in the east.

The most prominent and largest protected areas in this group are the Pfeiferanger and the Seeleithensee, which together make up the strictly protected core area of the Ibmer Moor. As part of the largest preserved and contiguous moor complex in Austria, they are nature reserves of Europe-wide importance. High and low moor areas, moor grass meadows and the lake itself with the surrounding litter meadows are important breeding areas for rare meadow birds such as the common snipe and curlew. The northern moors of Mattsee and Grabensee are also part of this supra-regional protected area. The one at Grabensee is a fen with moor grass meadows and bog birch forests, which is also home to the common snipe and curlew. The vegetation zones in the northern moor of Lake Mattsee are more fragmented, with moor grass meadows, fen areas, reed beds and remnants of wet meadows. The Teichstätt wetland in Lengau consists of a near-natural flood retention basin with remnants of bog vegetation and wet tall herbaceous meadows. At one hectare, the Jackenmoos on the Mühlberg in the municipality of Geretsberg is quite small. In this so-called dead ice hole - the hollow in the terrain has collapsed due to the melting of underground ice - high and transitional moorland has been preserved, in which an abundance of highly endangered moorland plants grow. The Imsee conservation area in Palting comprises the lake itself and the vegetation immediately surrounding it. The lake lies in a shallow depression surrounded by a narrow belt of woodland and on the northern shore by a small moorland forest that merges into fen meadows. Large stands of bog birch, individual mountain pines and other endangered, typical raised bog plants grow in the Kreuzbauernmoor in Pfaffing.
