Das Frankenburger Würfelspiel

Frankenburg am Hausruck, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • Suitable for groups

A special theatre event takes place in the municipality of Frankenburg every 2nd year. "The Frankenburg Dice Game" is staged on Europe's largest natural theatre stage by 500 amateur actors and 300 helpers.

In terms of content, the play deals with a sad chapter in Upper Austrian history.

In May 1625, a Catholic priest was to be installed in Frankenburg and other counties. However, the Protestant population, who suffered under the exploitative rule, rebelled against this in an armed resistance. The Bavarian governor, Count Adam von Herberstorff, wanted to put an end to this unrest and ordered all male inhabitants to assemble at Haushamerfeld. He promised them mercy, but then made them throw dice against each other for their lives. This gruesome event triggered the Upper Austrian Peasants' Wars.

A play based on Karl Itzinger, revised by Franz and Michael Neudorfer, newly staged by Alois Pillichshammer and Johann Gebetsberger.
