The Rainbach Gospel Plays
- the somewhat different theatre in the Sauwald

Since 2009, stories from the Bible have been brought to the stage in Rainbach im Innkreis in the theatre barn built especially for the Rainbach Gospel Plays - historically accurate and unadulterated. The author of the plays is the renowned Upper Austrian author Friedrich Ch. Zauner, who has created a literary monument to the Innviertel region with his tetralogy "The End of Eternity".
"I read the Bible carefree like a grandiose, mysterious, historical painting, an inexhaustible collection of stories full of wisdom and poetry, full of tenderness and cruelty," says Friedrich Ch. Zauner.

The Rainbach Gospel Playsoffer popular theatre in the best sense of the word: over the years, it has succeeded in attracting a diverse audience to Rainbach im Innkreis - the mixture of professional acting, music and dance and the involvement of amateur and child actors from the region appeals to people of all ages and also reaches many who have never attended a theatre performance before.
The audience experiences the biblical events as a not so antiquated, lively, rich and inspiring panorama in which people today can find themselves.
In 2022, the play "Hyssop in the Field" is on the programme. It tells of the beginnings: of Adam and Eve, who were expelled from paradise, and of the first murder in the history of mankind, the fratricide of Cain and Abel.
The play will be musically framed by a composition by Fridolin Dallinger, developed especially for the play, and Berlin theatre-maker Vincent Sierp will be directing the play for the first time this year.

The new production "Hyssop in the Field"

By the sweat of your face you shall eat your bread... so it says in the Book of Moses and Adam works hard to wring a harvest from the barren, stony fields. He grows hyssop while Abel tends the sheep. Adam's father has now grown old. He dreamily dwells on the fading memories of another life and his children are glued to his lips. They are addicted to the stories of this wonderland, the paradise - until Eve shoos them away. Worn out and exhausted by the countless pregnancies, she has no understanding or perhaps no strength to mourn what has been irretrievably lost.
This is the starting point for the new play "Hyssop in the Field" by the Rainbacher Evangelienspiele. With great historical expertise, the Upper Austrian author Friedrich Ch. Zauner carefully transposes the well-known story into the understanding of the 21st century and leads it to its inevitable climax: fratricide. His intention is to create a literary work that takes the Bible seriously - neither imitating nor defaming it.
