Altheim

Altheim, Oberösterreich, Österreich
The landscape around Altheim is gentle and beautiful. Yet down below it’s very hot.
Since 1989, sulphurous thermal water has been bubbling from 2,300 metre-deep springs. It is used to supply 650 households with geothermal energy. Meanwhile on the surface flows the crystal-clear Ache river, which runs through the town and is a popular fishing water.
The beauty of Altheim was already recognised even by the Romans, who settled here about 2,000 years ago. Archaeological excavations have so far uncovered the foundations of two Roman villas, as well as a number of smaller finds. You can see these findings in the Ochzethaus Roman experience museum and in the Weirading open-air museum. The farmers' markets, exhibitions, and music concerts in the town are also well worth visiting.
