The east bank bike trail is one of the most beautiful bike trails in the Salzkammergut and is located right on the shores of Lake Hallstatt.

Hiking and biking along Lake Hallstatt

The east bank trail is often described as one of the most beautiful cycling and hiking trails in the Salzkammergut. One of the special attractions of this trail is the exciting suspension bridge over one of the deepest parts of Lake Hallstatt.
Since many hikers also use this path, we expect full consideration from cyclists here. Unfortunately, this is sometimes difficult in the narrower passages. Getting off the bike is sometimes necessary for the benefit of pedestrians.
Those who love variety are happy here, because the hike can be combined with a short train ride or with a boat trip.

At first, hikers and cyclists share the trail. After the Uferwirt Seeraunzn, the trails continues separately for about two kilometers. A short distance before the suspension bridge, the trails merge again. We ask for consideration for each other between hikers and cyclists.

Nature experience for cyclists

The fjord-like lake landscape, shaped by glacial ice, is impressive. About 10.000 years ago, Lake Hallstatt acquired its present appearance with the greatest width of 2.1 km and the greatest length of 8.2 kilometers.

Between the lakeshore and the railroad, a gravel path leads across meadows, past single houses, up and down later also in the forest to the south. When you cross the suspension bridge to the "Wehrgraben", remember when you look into the Lake that it has its greatest depth right here with whole 125.2 meters. The fifth largest lake in the Salzkammergut has an area of exactly 8.58 m2.

There are several possibilities to start the landscape experience, as you can start in Obertraun or Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt

The easiest place to start is in the district of Au in Bad Goisern. There are several inns located here. Along the cycle trail R2 you go to Untersee and from there you follow the asphalted trail before you reach the lake. Continue until you reach the Uferwirt Seeraunzn, always directly along the shore of Lake Hallstatt. After that, the bike trail runs separately from the hiking trail, above the lake. There are a few short climbs to master. After about two kilometers the trail continues together with the hiking trail and you first pass the suspension bridge, before you pass the railway station Hallstatt to Obertraun. The return trip is recommended on the same way back because there is no bike path from Hallstatt to Bad Goisern and the road is very busy.
