SPIRITUAL HIKING ON THE DONAUSTEIG:
Former monastery complex, abbey church
The monastery in Waldhausen was completed in 1161 and, like many other monasteries of its time, experienced many upheavals. It was dissolved under Joseph II. In 1800 parts were demolished because the building materials were needed elsewhere. Famous far and wide are the concerts in the magnificent abbey church (e.g., Strudengau festival weeks). In 2000, parts of the medieval and early monastery complex were uncovered and large parts of the monastery complex were renovated for new purposes, partly social purposes.
On the "outlook circuit" you encounter mystical places for contemplation, such as: swinging stone, sacrificial bowls and the hermit's cave. Being alone – community.
On this hike I feel the power of being alone and the power of community:
- Sometimes I simply need my peace. When do I enjoy being only for myself?
- When do I appreciate family and friendships, colleagues, when do I like to immerse myself in the crowd?
The start is at the marketplace heading north past the Gothic parish church, along the monastery path (lined with 100-year-old lindens) towards Schlossberg – abbey grounds with early Baroque abbey church, meditation path with text pillars from the Cathedral of Baltimore around the abbey grounds with a view of the bathing lake and Sarmingbach valley – continue along the bathing lake heading north on the Unterhaas farm road to Oberpichler (view towards the abbey grounds) further Grabner in the corner to Falkhäusl and ascent to Falkermauer (large granite fortress at 700 meters altitude with views into the small Ysper valley) further via Geretsberg on the ridge heading south to the natural monument Swinging Stone (19 m3 rock cone which can be set into vibration with some effort) and to the sacrificial bowls – continue via Oberwittmesser to the hermit’s cave at Steinberg (once served as a dwelling for a pious hermit) and over to the natural monument Schafstein (350-ton rock block at 748 meters altitude) with magnificent panoramic views (small Ysper valley, forest and Mühlviertel) and further via Handberger and Kronreithner to the viewing platform (13-meter-high viewing platform with homecoming cross at 662 meters altitude) with splendid panoramic views of the towns of Waldhausen and Schlossberg as well as the Mühlviertel hilly landscape. Finally, the descent via Blechnerhof to the marketplace = starting point.Tip:
