SPIRITUAL HIKING ON THE DONAUSTEIG:
Saint Wolfgang and PuppingWolfgang was born in Pfullingen (Swabia) in 924. In 968 he was ordained priest by St. Ulrich. His missionary zeal drove him as far as Hungary in the following years. In 972 he was appointed Bishop of Regensburg. In his office he made a name for himself above all as a courageous church reformer. In 976, during an internal church uprising against him, he fled to the Salzkammergut, lived for about five years at Falkenstein on Lake Wolfgang as a hermit (this place has been an important pilgrimage site ever since) and founded a monastery in what is now St. Wolfgang before returning to Regensburg. On his last visitation journey, he fell ill on the ship coming from Passau, went to the village ofBrandstatt, in Pupping and died on 31.10.994 in the chapel of St. Otmar there. He is the patron saint of sculptors, woodworkers, charcoal burners, carpenters and boatmen.
His message for today: Courage - to leave old ways and tread new paths, to risk something for one's visions and to rebuild one's life.
Directions:
From Pupping we turn slightly left off to the Pupping glider airfield; after the airfield we take a left turn and take the steep forestry trail up to Schaumburg castle ruins from where one enjoys a fantastic view of the mountains (in good weather). After a short break we walk to the car park and take a left turn to Landl chapel (a peaceful, relaxing forestry trail). We enjoy the view of the Danube and hike in a relaxed way slightly downhill to the left to Seebach and the ski jumping hill with a mats out-run. From there we hike again through the vegetable fields past Gstöttenau to Brandstatt. From the boat landing stage we walk through the fields of the Pupping farmers back to Pupping to the monastery church and the meditation trail in the monastery’s garden.Tip:
Beautiful walk through the vegetable fields of Pupping farmers, with challenging climb up to Schaunburg ruins, view across Eferdinger Basin with monastery garden and meditation pathSafety guidelines:
In winter the hiking trail is partly closed, as the steep slope does not provide a secure foothold.Equipment:
Hiking backpack (incl. rain cover), sturdy shoesAdditional information:
