The varied hike on the Nikoloweg lures with wonderful viewpoints of the Attersee and leads from the hill country through the forest to rocky terrain.
This forest and torrent nature trail in the Attersee-Traunsee nature park connects Steinbach and Weißenbach am Attersee and consists of well-laid paths to narrow paths, mainly in the forest. A short passage in more mountainous terrain is exposed but secured and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding nature.

The 5-kilometre-long Nikoloweg, a nature trail, leads through the forests at the foot of the Höllengebirge. It takes you from the gentle farmland to the rugged rocky region, where a healthy forest offers protection from falling rocks. From the village centre in Steinbach am Attersee, you start past the primary school (signposted "Nikoloweg nach Weißenbach") and cross the Großalmstraße via the zebra crossing. Follow Kirchenweg for a short distance to the first junction, where you turn left uphill ("Höhenweg Weißenbach"). Shortly afterwards, turn right onto the Ernst-Bitterlich-Weg and a few steps further on turn right onto the gravel road. Through a ditch you come to a meadow - there the narrow Nikoloweg branches off to the right. It leads gently up and down through the wooded slope (steps at one point, watch out for the signs at the junction with forest tracks). After 45 minutes, you cross a forest road and shortly afterwards the Brennerriesensteig, which leads down to the forestry office by the lake. Continue in the direction of Weißenbach, after a short ascent you pass another junction and then reach the steep protective forest terrain (rest area). The path, which is equipped with solid handrails, leads through a rocky flank. You descend via a short metal staircase, then a short passage is secured with a wire rope. After the protective walls against falling rocks, the first path on the right leads down to the main road (bathing area) - but we go straight on to the next junction in front of the Nikolokapelle chapel, to which the path owes its name. Take the steps on the right down to Hotel Post in Weißenbach, where you can take a break after almost two hours of hiking. Alternatively, you can stop off at the Hotel-Pension zur Post or the Café Fürthauer.

You can return via the same route or by boat or bus. If you are returning on foot, you can turn left about halfway down to the forestry office and return from there on the right along the church path.
