A strenuous and in places quite steep, but not particularly difficult mountain tour to one of the most beautiful panoramic peaks in the Salzkammergut.

The number 1 when it comes to views!

Alpin-Feinspitze all agree: the Hohe Sarstein is the most beautiful panoramic mountain in the Inner Salzkammergut. Up there is the only way to see the Dachstein glacier and the Hallstättersee at a glance - not to mention the rest of the panorama across the lakes of the Ausseerland to the Toten Gebirge and the distant Wiesbachhorn (Hohe Tauern).

The accompanying music is provided by the resolute Koppentraun, which rushes up to the summit cross from its 1400 metre deep notch. And the best thing about it: on the descent towards Obertraun you can enjoy the scenery for almost 2 kilometres!

From Steeg-Gosau railway station, go to the nearby level crossing, turn left and follow the main road into the nearby village of Au. After Landgasthof "Zur Post" turn right and follow Erlenstraße to St. Agatha. Turn right onto the main road, after the bridge turn left across the carriageway and up the old, in places steep and cobbled Pötschenstraße through the village of Sarstein. At the junction next to a memorial stone, continue left through the hamlet of Wiesleben. Soon afterwards, turn right onto the signposted and marked path no. 690 to Sarstein and cross the Pötschenstraße again (if you descend again on the following route, you can also stop here at Pötschenpass car park).

The marked forest path leads uphill. From the former "Simony viewpoint" you cross into the deeply torn Rotengraben, along which you then climb very steeply and in many serpentines to the Sarsteinalm. Continue briefly to a saddle and then branch off to the right onto path no. 692 and zigzag upwards through a rocky flank to a small gate. Finally, walk across the grassy slopes of the summit ridge to the summit cross.

In the descent, follow the path no. 692, which descends southwards over the 2 km long Sarstein ridge. You ll reach the Sarsteinhütte via alpine meadows. Soon after, the trail descends over a steep forest ridge and then turns left through the slope. Finally, you descend steeply in many hairpin bends alongside the Brettsteingraben to Obertraun.

In emergencies, call the mountain rescue service on 140!
