From Scharnstein / Tießenbachtal to the Hochsalm with a detour to the Moasenkögerl.

The starting point for this stimulating mountain tour is the car park near the Scharnstein ruins. You first follow the valley of the Tießenbach stream upwards and, passing the last houses, you soon enter the woods below the Windhagkogel. Trail no. 436 is well signposted and even has notes such as "2 tricky stream crossings at very high water levels". Another sign wishes you a "good ascent". A nice change from the otherwise mostly dry signposts. At a junction, keep left, cross a stream and quickly climb higher. Another signpost announces "Last third". The views become clearer; a few years ago, the wind cleared entire slopes. You climb up over these and reach the ridge that leads over to the summit of the Hochsalm. The view is magnificent and the rest is well deserved. The descent first leads back down over the ridge and then follows trail no. 437 downhill towards Hamberg under the Hutkogel. At a bend in the forest road at 850 metres, you should not overlook the turn-off to Maisenkögerl. A well-marked path leads through the forest to the end of a forest road and soon you have reached the rock bastion of the Maisenkögerl. A few sure-footed steps are necessary to reach the narrow summit with the beautiful view down to Scharnstein via a final rocky ascent.
"Herrgott d'Hoamat is schen" is pathetically written on the summit cross. For the rest of the descent, head back along the path towards the forest road. The Waldesruh hut is about 50 metres below the path in the last third. A forest road begins here, which you follow downhill until you reach the Tießenbach valley again.

Characteristics: beautiful mountain hike on well-marked and signposted paths, surefootedness required at the summit of the Maisenkögerl, descent on the forest road not marked

From the Hochsalm summit, the descent towards Enzenbachmühle in Grünau im Almtal is another option to extend this hike. The ALM am HOCHSALM is just 20 minutes below the summit.
