"Off to the south" is the motto of the Gusental hiking trail, which leads through a scenic delicacy, the Gusental valley.
After crossing a small stream at the Stroblmühle mill, hikers follow in the footsteps of the horse-drawn railway, which was the most important means of transport between Budweis and Linz in the 19th century. The track gauge of the railway was 1,106 millimetres. When the railway was in full operation, six goods trains and one passenger train travelled daily, with one goods train consisting of 30 carriages.
Shortly before the guardhouse no. 39, which has been preserved true to the original, you can still see the sleeper stones of the historic railway. At Schermühle, the hiking trail crosses the Kleine Gusen and leads to Schneiderwies', a popular natural playground where you can not only relax but also enjoy a cosy barbecue.
A sandy road leads to Pfaffendorf. Here the hiking trail crosses the Gusen again.
Follow the goods road uphill for a while and take a forest path to reach the small village of Möstling.
Finally, you reach the market square via Pillhofstraße.
