Description:

The Reichraminger Hintergebirge counts among the most beautiful and largest primeval landscapes in Austria. Through the central part flows the so-called "Große Bach" (called "Reichraming" in the lower part and also known as "Schwarzer Bach" in the upper part), which was formerly used for timber rafting.

Between the Schleierfall and the Annerlsteg lies the narrowest and most interesting part of the gorge, which was made passable again by the "Triftsteig" renovated with steel cables and clamps in 1987. The via ferrata partly follows the old route of the Triftsteig, which was then only equipped with narrow wooden walkways, thus letting one imagine the dangerous work of the timber rafters at that time (remains of the old route are still visible today).

Directions:

The actual via ferrata is about 2 km long, well secured, and leads along the right (eastern) riverside very diversely and scenically through the gorge. Parts are very exposed and narrow paths, often wet due to transversal streams.

Time required: "Triftsteig": 1 - 1.5 hours

On the opposite side of the gorge, you reach the forest road running through the valley (former track of the narrow-gauge railway for timber transport, which ceased operation only in 1971) through several long tunnels (possibly bring a flashlight) back to the starting point of the "Triftsteig". At the "Schleierfall", several options arise

Access:
on foot from the Weißwasser parking lot to Schleierfall in about 1 hour

by mountain bike from Anzenbach to Schleierfall about 2 hours

Return options:

Through the tunnels on the Hintergebirgsradweg.

Ascent along the Hochschlachtbach (very beautiful but very exhausting!, deep views to the Triftsteig) to the Anlaufalm and over the Hirschkogelsattel to the starting point (highly recommended for persistent hikers!).

On the Hintergebirgsradweg to Weißwasser or Mooshöhe

Tip:

For children and less experienced climbers, basic via ferrata equipment and possibly a short safety rope (for children) are recommended.

Safety guidelines:

Check the weather forecast before starting the route. In summer, approaching thunderstorms in the Hintergebirge are often noticed too late. There is no exit option along the Triftsteig. Sure-footedness and freedom from dizziness - only for experienced climbers!!!
