The Wasserklotz is THE lookout mountain if you want to overlook the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Old Beech Forests in the Kalkalpen National Park from above. In addition, the Wasserklotz surprises with an incredible 360° panorama: In the west, the Totes Gebirge with the Großer Priel and the Sengsengebirge with its loneliest areas show up, in the south the jagged row of the Haller Mauern seems very close, in the east the Gesäuseberge, the Hochschwab area and the Ötscherland can be seen, and in the north endless forests spread out towards the Ennstal valley. On a clear day you can see up to 54 two-thousand-meter mountain peaks
From the Zickerreith parking lot at Hengstpaß, head up the forest road on the left of the alpine hut to the edge of the forest and on to Kreuzau. Go straight on here, again up through the woods and pas the Zeitschenberg (at all turn-offs, stay straight on the marked forest road).
Soon you will reach the pastures of the Dörflmoaralm and the Hanslalm. From now on you are in the Kalkalpen National Park. Branch off to the right and follow the hiking trail across the meadow slope to Ahornsattel. There you turn right again and climb up in switchbacks on a marked forest path. After a steep ascent, you will reach the summit of Wasserklotz. The descent is to the west of the ascent on a marked trail through the forest.
Conclusion: Easy mountain hike on forest roads and good trails, but in the summit area surefootedness and a head for heights are required.
