Big Sonnstein in Ebensee
Description: Due to the strong storm on June 6, 2026, there was a windthrow between the Großer and Kleiner Sonnstein, which is obstructing or blocking the hiking trail.
For this reason, the path will be closed for the time being until the trees have been cleared. As the windthrow is on the municipal territory of Traunkirchen, this must be done by Traunkirchen.
diversion information: A detour is not possible. It is not known whether it is possible to slip through the trees.
The ascent to the Großer Sonnstein from Ebensee or the Kleiner Sonnstein from Traunkirchen is unhindered.
The big "Sonnstein", also called "Ebenseer Sonnstein" offers with his abprupt clipping to the lake "Traunsee" a great view and is reachable in a short time.
If you want to continue to the Traunkirchner or Kleiner Sonnstein, the path branches off to the left just below the summit, leads down a rocky step secured with wire ropes and mostly runs along the mountain ridge for an hour to the Kleiner Sonnstein. For hikers who are not sure-footed, it is advisable to bypass the rope protection at the markings in the forest.
