SPIRITUAL HIKING ON THE DONAUSTEIG:
St. Anthony Monastery
The St. Anthony House is a former Franciscan monastery. It is located in the center of Grein near the Danube. The small residential community tries to walk an inner “pilgrimage to the sources of faith” following the example of St. Anthony and to discover the springs of life together with the guests: in the hour prayer, in the celebration of the liturgy, in silence, in conversation...
For closed groups, reflection days or similar events are gladly organized. But above all, the St. Anthony House invites individuals all year round to days of silence, reflection, and a monastery vacation.

- On the “Grein Donaublick Loop” I reflect on how I look, my size, my appearance, my face when I am happy, sad... my “demeanor”, my expression, my impact.
- I look at the Danube's shore and try to catch my face/reflection – due to the movement of the current, this is not easy.
The circular route starts at the hiking info point at the Danube bank. We follow the Donausteig to the rest area at Kalvarienberg and the Gallery in Granite. After this detour with a magnificent view of the Danube and the town of Grein, we continue into Jubiläumstraße (left; the Donausteig continues right into Wienerweg). After 300 m we turn left (Mayrhoferweg). After another left curve, it goes down again towards the center. The street ends in Friedhofstraße, where we turn right and go under the railway. At the end of the street, we turn left (Grillparzerstraße) and after about 200 m turn right again (Stifterstraße). We now follow this street until we meet the Donausteig again. We follow it over the Mühlberg (rest area) to Grein, through Kreuznerstraße and via the castle park into the center. Over the town square and Donaugasse, we reach our starting point.Tip:

Im Einklang mit der Natur wirtschaften…
ist das Ziel des vom OÖ Naturschutzbund, Bezirksgruppe Machland Nord betreuten Hofes. Zwei Wohnhäuser und diverse Wirtschaftsgebäude zeichnen den Hof aus. Das Areal gliedert sich in Wiesen oder Weiden und Wald. Etwa 20 Hochlandrinder werden in Freilandhaltung gehalten. Jahrtausendelang bewirtschaftete und kultivierte der Mensch das Land im Einklang mit der Natur. Mit diesem Naturwirtschaftshof sollen altes Wissen und alte Bewirtschaftungsmethoden bewahrt werden. Durch eine ökologische schonende Bewirtschaftung kann eine enorme Artenvielfalt und das Landschaftsbild, das den Betrachter erfreut, erhalten werden. Das Wissen um diese Bewirtschaftungsart soll in Form einer Ausbildung zum Naturwirt auch weitergegeben werden.
In der Nähe von Grein trieb einst auch der Teufel sein Unwesen. Was es mit der Geschichte "Die Teufelsmauer" auf sich hat, weiß die Donau-Sage.

Seit mehr als 500 Jahren thront Schloss Greinburg, das älteste Wohnschloss Österreichs, majestätisch über der Stadt Grein und der Donau.
Es wurde zwischen 1488 und 1495 mit der kaiserlichen Bewilligung von Kaiser Friedrich III. von Heinrich und Siegmund Prüschenk erbaut und war eines der ersten Schlösser im deutschsprachigen Raum. Das Schloss hat einen besonderen Platz im Herzen der herzoglichen Familie von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha. 1823 von Herzog Ernst I. erworben, diente es den folgenden Generationen als österreichischer Wohnsitz und als Jagdresidenz.

Der Klapperstorch zu Gast in Grein
In Machland war der Storch bis 1925 ein eher unbekannter Vogel. Zwischen 1925 und 1935 siedelte sich das erste Storchenpaar im Machland an. Der Weißstorch ist ein Zugvogel, der auf Felsvorsprüngen, Bäumen oder Gebäuden nistet. In Saxen hat er es sich 1964 auf dem Schornstein der Volksschule bequem gemacht. Dieser Horst war bis heute durchgehend besetzt. 2007 errichteten die Weißstörche erstmals in Grein einen Horst auf dem Schornstein der Gärtnerei Luger. Ein Jahr später kam es zu ersten erfolgreichen Brut mit zwei Jungstörchen.
