Upper Austria - baroque, colorful natural spectacles between the Danube, Inn and Salzach rivers
s'Entdeckerviertel is an exciting mix of city and countryside. For example, the historic town of Braunau am Inn and the Lower Inn European Nature Reserve. Braunau impresses with its historic old town with its Gothic town square, narrow alleyways and imposing buildings such as the parish church with the highest towers in Austria. Don't miss the historic bathing room in the medieval bathing museum!
The Innviertel impresses with its untouched nature, honest cuisine and down-to-earth attitude. Cycling and hiking are excellent here. For a visit to the Spa Resort Geinberg, you can risk a few kilometers off the Inn cycle path.
Schärding is a pearl. The baroque town on the Inn has a lot to offer. Firstly, the famous Silberzeile, a row of colorful houses on the town square that once belonged to wealthy merchants - the colors indicated the guilds. There are also several city gates, fountains, churches, the Old Inn Bridge and enchanting parks, to name but a few. Another jewel right on the river is also impressive: the Neuhaus moated castle on the Bavarian bank of the Inn. As part of the Danube region in Upper Austria, Schärding also opens the door to an incredibly moving region.
The cycle path leads from the source of the Inn at the Maloja Pass in the Swiss Engadine via Bavaria and Tyrol to Upper Austria and on to the confluence of the river with the Danube near Passau. In the Innviertel region, the route is flat throughout, making it ideal for families. Relaxation is guaranteed in any case, as the "R3" runs through one of the most beautiful floodplain landscapes in Austria.
Experience nature in the floodplain
Frauenstein Castle near Mining is a great place to take a break on this side of the border. A dip in the bathing lake in Mühlheim am Inn is also refreshing before continuing on. A diverse flora and fauna awaits cyclists in the "Lower Inn European Reserve". Around 300 bird species alone have been counted here in recent years. Many of these feathered friends make a stopover here on their flight south. The viewing platform in Kirchdorf/Inn serves as an observation post directly on the cycle path.
Baroque splendor
Recharged, the route continues to two Baroque gems on the Inn: the towns of Obernberg and Reichersberg. In Obernberg, you should not miss the birds of prey show at the castle: From April to the end of October, the falconry team lets its majestic birds fly their circles. Obernberg's market square with its rococo façades is also well worth a visit.
Just a few kilometers away is the imposing Reichersberg Abbey. There are many ways to recharge your batteries here - whether strolling through the monastery garden, taking a break in the Stiftsstüberl and Stiftsvinothek or in the silence of the abbey church. The wellness world of the Spa Resort Geinberg is also not far away. Tired cyclists will be revitalized here at the latest.
The route continues to Schärding, the charming baroque town with its incomparable Silberzeile, and via Wernstein to the three-river city of Passau.
