Circular route on an easily accessible road and forest paths with culturally and historically interesting sights. The route starts at Gasthof Dickinger, leads along Hochfeldstraße, past the castle grounds, to Bad Wimsbach parish church, through the "Kastanienallee" natural monument to the Ehrenfeld chapel. A good place to refuel. Then continue following the signs to the "Villa Rustica"
What is the "Villa Rustica"?
One of the last visible signs of Bad Wimsbach-Neydharting's historical past is the remains of the walls of a Roman country house in Totenhölzl - around 1 km from the edge of the village - which was once part of a large-scale settlement built around 160 A.D. The walls were uncovered by Dr Vetters in 1951 and restored in 1997 after a renewed threat of decay.
After visiting the "Villa Rustica", the route continues through the viaduct (forest path to Waschenbergerstraße), following the signs to the right to the village of Traun, along the gravel pit to Ehrenfeld, left along the sports facilities past Bad Wimsbach railway station. A detour to the "Hackenschmiede" open-air museum is worthwhile (guided tours on request at the municipal office, tel. 07245/25055-0). From the Hackenschmiede it goes directly to the market square (refreshment stops: Café Jöchtl, Wirtshaus Staudinger).
At the end of the market square, turn left over the Wimbach footbridge, then right to the Pointnermühl footbridge. Cross the Schoiblmühl bridge to Mostschank Huemer (Fri-Sun from 16:00), where the next cosy refreshment stop awaits. From the Mostschank Huemer continue to the Hubertus Chapel. Via the forest path to the Schwarzlmüller bed and breakfast, vulgo "Mairhof" and back to Gasthof Dickinger (closed on Tuesdays from midday), where our hike ends.
