Pettenbach, situated at the entrance to the Almtal valley, where the mountains merge into the wide foreland, is a settlement area dating back thousands of years. The first traces of settlement date back to the Stone Age. Finds of rock gardens along the Alm and along the Aiterbach stream prove that the area was already inhabited in prehistoric times.

Its north-south extension of 14 km is always bordered by the Alm river in the west and the Aiterbach stream in the east.

Illyrians and Celts can be traced back historically. The ancient salt road crossed the iron road here. From then on, the favourable traffic situation was a magnet for settlers.
