Windegg castle ruins
Windegg castle ruins were built in the 13th century and restored in 1980 by a working group founded at the time through numerous hours of work.
In 1999 the castle keep was opened and the "Gallery in the tower" was established. Every year from May to October regional artists exhibit their works in the tower.
With the Windegg castle ruins, Upper Austria probably has the most beautiful example of a Romanesque castle.
For tours through Windegg castle ruins please contact the market town office Schwertberg.
Aiser stage Schwertberg

Leisure meadow at the Aist – local recreation in the center of Schwertberg
The leisure meadow at the Aist in Schwertberg was opened in summer 2005.
Every year from May the summer season starts. Children's playground equipment for the little ones, a beach volleyball court and a large sunbathing lawn offer ideal opportunities for leisure activities for the whole family. All hiking trails start at the leisure meadow parking lot – free parking available. After a nice hike through the Schwertberg municipality area, all hungry or thirsty visitors can stop at the snack stand at the leisure meadow before heading home.
Directions:The Weltstoarunde starts in the wild-romantic Josefstal - along the Aist and leads over forest and meadow paths to the Windegg castle ruins. Enjoy the unique atmosphere of the castle ruins. From May to October, you can climb the tower on Sundays from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm – enjoy the great view. From there, the hike continues to the highest point of Schwertberg - the Weltstein - which also gives the "Weltstoarunde" its name.
After the steep ascent, you can rest briefly there and gather strength for the descent. Record your impressions of the hike in the summit book. Continue hiking through the forests of Lina - past the Mascherbauer organic farm (open Thursday to Saturday). The hike then leads over the Aiser open-air stage and the center of Schwertberg - with excellent gastronomy and great beer gardens - back to the starting point.
On the way you will find the imposing Schloss Schwertberg. Before you reach the parking lot, just stop at the leisure meadow by the Aist. Relax briefly before the journey home or maybe take a jump into the Aist.

The Windegg Castle in Ruins is one of the largest castles in lower Mühlviertel Region and covers 1,042m². The Castle probably was erected around 1170 and fell into ruin by the end of the 17th century - indeed, not much was left of the actual mighty Romanesque structure. Windegg Castle has been restored by the committed "Windegg Initiative" since 1980 to save it from complete dilapidation. Thus visitors can now step back in time and experience the remnants of the 12th century Castle.
As legend has it, a hermit is said to have lived in this home long before the Valley was settled in the 18th century. The Valley derives its name from Count Wenzel Josef Thürheim. More probably the small complex was part of the Castle park grounds. Restoration works were carried out in 1980.
