Forest air bathing in Leopoldschlag

Leopoldschlag lies in the Mühlviertel highlands between the mountain ranges of the Bohemian Forest and Sternwald to the west and the Freiwald to the east. The centre of the landscape organism of Leopoldschlag is the Leopoldschläger Berg. The north-south connection through the Bohemian Gate to Bohemia, which has been important since early history, runs through the municipality. The horse-drawn railway to the north also ran through here, the route of which is now a popular long-distance hiking trail, as are the Nordwaldkammweg, the Burgen- und Schlösserweg and Gewerbe am Fluss.

The hiking trail leads from the market town of Leopoldschlag via Pramhöf around the Leopoldschläger Berg to Mardetschlag, on to Hammern an der Maltsch and back to the market town. The shorter L3 mountain trail leads over the Leopoldschläger Berg and rejoins the L1.

The Leopoldschläger Berg has an unusual geology and therefore a special effect on people: A variety of granitoids occur on the slopes in a very small area (Weinsberger granite, Plochwald granite, Freistädter granodiorite, other fine-grained granites and porphyrites). This can be recognised in nature by the enormous frequency of large anthills. They seek out the energy of geological movements and build their mounds on them. For humans, such places are associated with a high level of creativity. On the northern slope (Kaiserbrunn) and eastern slope (Marienquelle) we also find springs with special water.

On the way over the Leopoldschläger Berg we come to the Martinstein. This impressive rock formation was an important place of worship for the ancient inhabitants of Mardetschlag. Further on, we come across a bowl stone and a special forest martyr a little further on. On the way to the village of Mardetschlag we find the Jankira. The rock behind the Pammer inn is an old legendary place with a pleasant, airy atmosphere.

Mardetschlag is a good place to take a break. We then continue on towards Hammern. Along the way we come across a large granite quarry. Once in Hammern, a detour to the "Rauschenden Felsen" is recommended. The approx. 6 metre high granite formation is located between Hammern and the historic Maltsch bridge in Mairspindt. Here we experience a special acoustic phenomenon: at a certain point we can hear the sound of a waterfall that seems to come from the rock.
From Hammern we return to the market town of Leopoldschlag.
