Forest air bathing in Neumarkt

Neumarkt is located in the Central Mühlviertel highlands and has a large part of the Freistadt Basin in the northern part of the municipality. The landscape centre of the basin landscape is the Zeißberg (802 m) to the west. To the south is the European nature reserve of the Kleine Gusen valley.
Neumarkt is a transitional town and as such lies on a mountain itself, the highest point of which is the Tannberg. Five castle stables in the immediate vicinity point to its historical importance on the route from the Danube to Bohemia.

The route largely follows the Fr10, N1, 150 and N5 hiking trails. The first destination is the landscape centre of the large Zeissberg, visible from afar. The views on all sides make the summit experience unforgettable. The impressive rock formations at the summit of the mountain give an idea of how sacred the mountain has always been to the people of the region.

From the Zeissberg, we hike down into the Gusental valley, where we gain a small insight into the European nature reserve of this romantic valley. At the mouth of the Tröbingerbach stream, we find an energising place to rest. We then hike up to the romantic village of Stiftung, which consists of stone-built houses surrounded by forests.

The next stop is the Kiraberg (Kirchberg, 852 m). In Celtic, KIR places are places that were used for religious purposes, see KIRche. Later, the mountain peak was used as a signal mountain, and in the Middle Ages as a site for a castle. The effect amidst the remains of the walls is strengthening and invigorating. Continuing on towards the village of Lamm, we reach the so-called "Himmelsstiege". A rock face marks the entrance, and a short ridge walk takes you to the summit, the "Himmel". The name of the trail promises a very special effect on body, mind and soul.

After Lamm, the Prei forest lies to the left of the hiking trail, a mysterious forest with mystical paths and places. After the Schaller Pflaster, we reach the Gusental valley, which we follow for a short distance before climbing up to Trosselsdorf and stopping off at the cider museum. We then descend back into the Gusental valley, hike to the Stroblmühle mill and then ascend to Neumarkt.
