Forest air bathing in Pregarten

Pregarten lies in the Central Mühlviertel highlands and forms the land between the Feldaist and Waldaist rivers. The centre of the Pregarten landscape organism is the hill south of Pregartsdorf near the Hubertus Chapel.
Pregarten is part of the larger landscape organism "Untere Feldaist" (Hagenberg, Pregarten, Wartberg, Unterweitersdorf). The neighbouring Aist-Naarn-Kuppenland lies to the east and is bordered by the Waldaist. The southern Feldaist valley between the municipalities of Pregarten and Wartberg ob der Aist is the first landscape conservation area in Upper Austria, covering 45 hectares, and the Waldaist valley has been designated a European nature reserve.

Feldaist North forest bathing trail

The hike starts at the town square in Pregarten or at the car park in front of the Bruckmühle. From the town square, walk through the passage next to the town hall, across the car park and Marktleiten on the left down to the Kulturhaus Bruckmühle.

After the Aist bridge, turn right into the Obere Feldaisttal. The path leads along the Aist and crosses over to the other bank at the second bridge. Here you will find a 16th century hammer mill. It is worth making a detour to the Kalvarienberg chapel, the burial chapel and a place of worship in front of it. After descending to the hammer mill, you turn right and immediately reach the Pürmühle mill, which was owned by King Ottokar of Przemysl around 1251. Further upstream, you walk through the so-called Fuchsschweif, pass a beautiful pitch oil stone and cross a bridge to reach the Kumpfmühle, whose origins date back around 1000 years. The current owner has lovingly restored it over many years and is happy to show it to visitors as a museum. The path leads back down the right bank of the Aist to the bridge at the Ledermühle sawmill. From there you walk uphill on a path, cross the railway and return to the start via Marktleiten.
