Approx. 3,000 years ago Celtic settlers started mining salt in the mountains above today’s village of Hallstatt, beginning the Salzkammergut region’s history of salt. Today this area is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The “Salzkammergut Cycle Path” leads from Strobl via Bad Ischl to the village of Bad Goisern. From its center, follow the cycle path. The route runs alongside the main road and takes you to Steeg/Au. Turn left at the “Gasthof zur Post” restaurant and continue on the cycle path to Obertraun. From here, follow the Koppentraun River to Bad Aussee. Continue to Altaussee, the Blaa Alm and then to the Rettenbachalm. From here, return to Bad Ischl and the starting point in Strobl.
