The starting point for the hike is the hiking info point at the Danube promenade. The well-signposted family hiking trail No. 9 first leads through the Danube town of Grein, past the Granite Gallery, over the Kreuzleithen to the Werfenstein viewpoint.
Further to the gorge entrance at Gießenbachmühle. Through the gorge, it goes uphill past spectacular granite formations to the highlight of the hike, the "Silent Stone." At this point, the stream flows partly underground.
Then the path continues, first through the forest, then over meadows, to the Aumühle inn. On the elevated trail No. 7, it goes through the gentle rolling hills of the Mühlviertel, first on a forest path, later on farm roads back to the Danube town of Grein.
On the way back, a detour from hiking trail No. 7 to the Marienstein is recommended, a granite rock formation with a statue of Mary - a magnificent view of Grein and the Danube valley all the way to the Alps! For lunch, the country inn Aumühle is recommended; for a snack and to 'recharge' before the ascent through the gorge, the snack station Gießenbachmühle is ideal.Safety guidelines:
