Description:

Today you will enjoy all day the view of the thousand towers of the Gosaukamm, which formed over 200 million years ago as a coral reef in warm sea water, and the nearly 3000 meter high Dachstein, which still reminds a bit of the ice age with the Great Gosau Glacier.

Directions:

From the main road at the tourist info in Gosau-Vordertal, the Salzkammergut Trail leads up the Kirchenweg to the Catholic church. Above it, go left via steps to the Kalvarienberg, and from the Kalvarienberg chapel shortly right on the Panorama Trail. Then the Herrenweg (No. 611) branches off left uphill with the sign "Gablonzer Hut, Zwieselalm". It leads through forest to a forest road, follows it briefly to the left, then turns right to another forest road (1,050 m). This gravel road takes you further south, where the section around the ski area under the Hornspitz can be bypassed on the right via a path to the Leutgeb and Falmberg alm. After the last kilometer of road, past the Ötscher alm, you walk right on the Herrenweg to a ski lift and climb through steeper forest terrain to the Edtalm gate. From there it goes right (No. 622) in switchbacks up to the welcoming Zwieselalm (1,440 m).

Tip:

Note: Last descent of the Gosaukamm cable car from mid-June to mid-September at 5:20 pm, before and after until the end of October at 4:50 pm. Current info: www.dachstein.at

Note: Bus connection (line 542) from Gosausee to Gosau-Hintertal.

Safety guidelines:

  • In alpine terrain, be aware of the danger of rockfall.

  • Until early summer, you can encounter steep snowfields or firn grooves – especially with icing, there is acute risk of falling and thus danger to life!

  • Due to storm damage, forestry work or construction work, some trail sections may be temporarily difficult or impossible to pass.

  • Cows on the alpine pasture are often curious. Due to mother cow farming, they develop a strong drive to protect their calves. So move quietly on cow pastures, keep at least 20 m distance from the animals and never pet calves! In case of threatening behavior (scraping, stamping) slowly back away (do not turn your back). Dogs must be on a leash; they must not bark at or chase cows. In case of an attack, you must definitely release them from the leash.

Equipment:

For all stages, you need hiking or mountain shoes with profiled rubber soles as well as wind- and waterproof clothing.

Spare clothes for changing and a small emergency first aid kit should also be in your backpack. How much provisions you pack depends on the number of places to stop. In any case, you should take enough to drink. Telescopic poles are especially helpful when going downhill.
