The second section of this alpine variant leads over one of the most beautiful lookout mountains in the Salzkammergut. Nevertheless, the locals from Ischl gave it its name for another reason: Its round, grass-covered summit cap reminds them of the shape of a "Schölln", that is, a cowbell. On the descent to the Hochkogelhaus, however, the summit shows why the people of Ebensee, who see its rocky north side, call it the "Wildenkogel".
Directions:From the Ischler Hütte you first follow path no. 211 towards "Schönberg". Through sparse woodland you reach a fork. Take the right path – no. 226 – and hike through the confusing larch and karst terrain below the Feuchterkogel uphill. Above this rises on the left the Altarkögerl (1,723 m). Even further up, you finally ascend through the grassy southwest flank to the summit cross on the Schönberg (2,090 m). The highest point of the massif – plus three meters! – is located on the western neighboring summit and is accessible via a short secured section. 2:00 h
Descent to the left over the summit meadow and the rocky, partly larch-covered northwest ridge (marking no. 227). The deep view north to the Rauhen Kögel is impressive, but the steep rock cliffs to the right of the path warn caution! Finally, the ridge runs through larch thickets over a saddle dotted with some ponds before the inconspicuous Möselhorn (1,657 m) ends. Already above this, the path turns right and meets path no. 211, which runs to the east of the Schönberg from the Ischler Hütte to the Hochkogelhaus.
From here, continue right downhill and over a cirque into the hollow below the Großer Rauhenkogel. At the fork there, stay left and continue hiking under the steep west face of the Großer and Kleiner Rauhenkogel through steep rock, larch, and scree terrain (there is a via ferrata above on the right). Finally, you reach the Hochkogelhaus (1,558 m) of the Ebensee nature friends via a wooded ridge. 2:00 h
The shelter, opened in 1924, stands in a particularly beautiful place in front of the wild backdrop of impressive rock summits. As a short extra, it is recommended to climb the nearby summit of the Hochkogel (1,591 m), secured with a fence, as it promises a great view to the north and the nearby rock towers of the Rauhenkogel.
Tip:Summit detour to Rinnerkogel (2,012 m)
Safety guidelines:- In alpine terrain, pay attention to the danger of falling rocks.
- Until early summer, you may encounter steep snowfields or firn grooves - especially when icy, there is acute danger of falling and life-threatening risk!
- Due to storm damage, forestry work or construction measures, some path sections may be temporarily difficult or impassable.
- Cows on the alpine pasture are often curious. Due to dam-calf husbandry, they develop a strong instinct to protect their calves. So move calmly on cow pastures, keep at least 20 m distance from the animals, and do not pet calves! In case of threatening behavior (scraping, stomping), slowly walk backwards (do not turn your back). Keep dogs on a leash; they must not bark at or chase cows. In case of an attack, you must definitely release them from the leash.
For all stages you need hiking or mountain boots with a profiled rubber sole as well as wind- and rainproof clothing.
Spare clothes for changing and a small first aid kit should also be in your backpack. How much provision you pack depends on the number of refreshment options. In any case, you should take enough to drink. Telescopic poles are especially helpful when going downhill.
