Mondsee Panoramatrail

Almkogel is probably the most beautiful viewpoint mountain directly at Mondsee. From St. Lorenz there is a rather steep path going up, which is also interesting for trail runners and can be tackled well with poles. The same path back is not very runnable, which is why a nice alternative was chosen here that descends back to Mondsee via very fun sections.

Directly next to Gasthof Drachenwand is a hiking sign that already shows the ascent to Almkogel at the junction. You follow into the forest up to the Thekla Chapel. Shortly after, the path splits and we follow steeply uphill toward Almkogel! Here poles and shoes with good grip are important. Over many switchbacks, the path winds further up a slope. There are repeatedly beautiful sections with great views. Once at the top, you can make a detour to the summit of Almkogel, but beware: on some days it is very busy and narrow. Much less crowded is the downhill. This follows the Mountains and Lakes Trail at the junction below Almkogel. From the perspective of the ascent direction, you continue straight down. After a few rocky sections, you reach a forest road which we immediately follow left. Soon after, we reach a junction toward “Michlofen,” which we follow downhill on forest paths.

Shortly before reaching the main road at the lake, you can run a bit to the left above on the forest road before reaching it. Along the hiking path next to the road, you come directly back to the starting point.

Anyone who wants to climb the summit of Almkogel should, if possible, pick a weekday.
