Paths covering:
A leisurely bike tour through the romantic Rettenbachtal alternates with a beautiful but long circular hike in the Kalkalpen National Park to the imperial hunting lodge.
At the Würstl Hütt'n there is the possibility to recharge the e-bike. Hannes also offers small snacks and tools for minor repairs. The R31 cycle path leads behind the Roßleithen railway station to the district of Rading. Continue along the Rettenbach, past the Vorderer Rettenbach car park and cycle to the end of the road. The change station is located at the Jaghaus Rettenbach.
For the bike tour, add approx. 5.7km and 25 minutes with a slight incline to the hiking data.
HIKE: First through the beech forests of the Kalkalpen National Park, later through mountain pines towards Hoher Nock. At the exit from the Budergraben, keep left and pass the old Koppenalm. From the south-western foothills of the Nock ridge, the trail descends to the Bärenriedlauhütte, once the imperial hunting lodge of Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne. The hut is NOT staffed and can only be visited on certain days (www.kalkalpen.at). Enjoy the view of the Windischgarsten valley and the Tote Gebirge mountains in the background.
From here, the route leads along the south side of the Sengsengebirge mountains, first on a narrow path and later on a forest road and forest paths via the Saubach and Koppen back down into the valley. The last section back to the changing station is on the road or finally on a forest road.
Walking time approx. 7 hours in total.
Tip: take enough to drink with you, especially in the summer months it can get very warm on this south-facing hike!
The Bärenriedlau hut is not a managed hut! It was built in the 18th century for cattle herders and hunters and later served the Austrian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand as Jadgunterkunft. On open days, interested visitors can tour the culturally and historically interesting facility and learn how the once aristocratic hunting area around the Bärenriedlau developed into a game rest area in the Kalkalpen National Park.
