Sgraffito - art on Pettenbach's facades
A cultural walk in cooperation with the Bartlhaus Museum

Since the exhibition about Leopold Feichtinger in the parlour in the Bartlhaus has been redesigned, a tour is offered on which you can discover 13 sgraffiti in Pettenbach. A free map describing the tour is available in the Museum of Writing.

Sgraffiti are images scratched into different coloured layers of plaster. The term comes from the Italian and means "to scratch". The technique became widespread from the Renaissance onwards. In the 20th century, there was a revival of facade paintings. They are figurative and geometric depictions in the style of the time. Feichtinger's sgraffiti adorns private and public buildings in Pettenbach and the surrounding area. He created sayings and pictures on house facades, lettering for businesses and decorated doors, windows and walls with decorative patterns.

He began with sketches of motifs and designed several variations. This was followed by a true-to-scale final drawing with the exact position of the work on the façade. He sometimes used the school's gymnasium to enlarge it. He perforated the contours in the full-size plan. He applied layers of different coloured plaster. He transferred the drawing onto the façade through the holes in the plan. He then scraped out the desired layers of colour.

There is a lot to discover on the sgraffito tour through Pettenbach. Not all of the sgraffiti has survived, such as the elegant decoration on the former secondary school. Today it is covered by the full thermal insulation.
