From the beautiful and truly authentic Bad Goisern, not far from Lake Hallstatt, there is a trail running circuit that is considered one of the best options, especially by the locals. The high Kalmberg. This variant offers a beautiful counter-clockwise traverse of the mountain range followed by a summit ridge. With its beautiful scenery, ambitious trail runners can not only let off steam on the ascent, but also look forward to a flowing downhill.
Directions:
Start at the train station in Bad Goisern. Follow the Perndanner promenade, then turn right and cross a bridge over the Traun. Here you meet the marked hiking trail. Soon you are walking uphill along the "Bachgraben" on a slightly ascending road. You then walk through the small village of "Steinach". At the end of this, the trail through the forest begins.
You will pass an old sign with the inscription "Jochwand". Here you can also take the marked path through the forest to the right, or you can simply follow the same path straight ahead, both of which lead straight back together.
If you have the right calves, the single trail in the forest is also a wonderful place to run. At the next junction, it is important to turn left slightly downhill onto the road, which you then follow to the Hochmut parking lot. Here the path becomes a little steeper and if you like walking with poles you can pull them out. The trail continues through the forest for a while, sometimes a little steeper, before the trees clear and the view of Bad Goisern and the surrounding mountains opens up. The mountain ridge that you will follow can also be seen for the first time. But first you cross a few slopes in the sun and then again through small groups of trees before you reach a lovely alpine pasture at a brisk pace.
Be sure to enjoy the magnificent view of the Gosaukamm, the Katergebirge and, of course, the Dachstein! With fresh energy, you can then speed along the extremely rewarding trail to the Goiserer Hütte.
Or turn off shortly beforehand to tackle the final ascent over the magnificent mountain ridge before stopping off at the hut later on. Here it gets a little rockier and you can see the longed-for summit very close. Once you have finally arrived there, a fantastic "all-round view" awaits the runner, including the entire Goiserer Kamm, a project for experienced and ambitious runners, so not to be underestimated.
The summit of the Kalmberg really does look like the side profile of an "Indian" from below, as described on a display board there.
Once you've had your fill of the panorama, you can take the same route back to the hut for refreshments. For the downhill back to Bad Goisern, there is a great option via trail 880. The trail follows short serpentines, quite "flowy" but quite rocky downhill. A few times you cross the low-hanging ropes of the material ropeway. The trail runs into the bottom of a ditch and leads over a short section of root trail in the forest onto the forest road. This leads us straight back to the start.
